Desmond stayed home "sick" this morning. His forehead felt warm, so we let him stay home. The deal is no TV, video games, or any kind of personal enjoyment whatsoever. If you stay home, you suffer.
So, about 10:30 in the morning, he was already asking if school would be out yet, or if it was before lunch or after lunch or during lunch or what... Obviously he was more bored than he was ill. So we set out to walk to school to make it an adventure (it's just shy of two miles to the school) with a stop at Wheat State Pizza to patronize their lunch buffet. While I was sitting there after eating too much pizza and watching Desmond eat what he could (not very much) of a three-scoop mint chocolate chip ice-cream cone, I was looking outside just admiring the day. It was just Too Nice.
I asked Desmond if he'd rather go to school or just walk back home and enjoy being outside. The catch was he'd have to help me put brush in the fire. Any guesses on what he chose to do?
So we took a long way home. He spun some stories and I listened with much interest. Of course I can't remember everything he had to tell me. But somewhere in there was a report about the San Diego Zoo having been closed for a while because the animals had escaped and they were "running amuck." Various details of that story are sadly lost forever.
It'd been a long time since either of us had enjoyed so much of each other's undivided attention. (Cue Cat's in the Cradle.) Of course, when we got home, the cable modem was still doing its best undead impression. (I officially hate Mediacom at this point.) And my Verizon card was rendering my computer slow, and its connection was particularly slow, too. There was nothing to do but go outside and burn stuff up.
Desmond helped me here and there, but, for the most part, he spent hours out by the swing set where he's been digging and constructing a pretty ornate system of canals and bridges in the sand. He was outside today for more time than he usually spends outside in a week. I think we picked a good day to take a day off.
I ran with Jill and Beth tonight. Tonight the three of us comprised the Baldwin Running Club. We met up at the stadium parking lot and ran out to the Baldwin City Lake. About a six mile out-and-back run on gravel, mostly, with some rolling hills. Nice scenery and a very pleasant run if you can discount the infrequent redneck who doesn't even see it as an option to slow down on the gravel when approaching a pedestrian.
After running, I threw a few more morsels on the fire before heading in to clean up and work a while. Desmond and I are planning on walking to school in the morning, so it's actually off to bed before midnight for once.
