The other day, I found this salamander in our yard. I was giving our biggest garden plot a third pass with the tiller and I noticed this little tail flailing around. He was lucky, I guess. Not only did he not die that day, he got to stay in a luxury Rubbermaid™ container for three nights in the climate-controlled environment that passes as our kitchen. Yes. Our kitchen. You worry about your swine flu... we don't even care the slightest about salamandonella.
I say this is a "he," but, of course I can't be sure it's not a sala-woman-der. But, since the Rubbermaid™ container was single-occupancy, I don't think I trod on its sala-human-der rights. We released him back into the wild of the garden. But not before Desmond made a couple movies of it swimming and doing barrel-rolls in the bathroom sink. Pretty cool.
First salamander I've found in all my years. I must say it was at least as cool as the scorpions my cousin and I used to "hunt" at my Grandma's house on the hill in Dexter.
Today was a digging-in-mud kind of day for me. Would be fun and all that if I'd been born — or turned into — a newt. Just a frustrating day. Funny how the sun can shine for days, and we can have great weather... but just throw in one Monday with dreary skies and rain and all the good weather is forgotten. I just felt edgy all day, and I'm tired of working on things that should have been buttoned up a long time ago. Things that used to work and now just mysteriously don't. Throw in the constant of twenty-four hours in a day, and the frustration mounts.
So I made myself go running this evening. May be the last time this season to have to wear the beanie to keep the ears warm. They're putting on a small 5k here in Baldwin this coming Saturday, and Desmond said he'll do it, too. He'll probably spend the time walking, which is more than fine. I may catch up with him after I run the 5k and walk half the route with him. So I ran the errand of taking the entry forms and fee to the Baldwin Athletic Club.
Now I'm sitting at my desk trying to find the motivation to work on something to feel like I actually moved the stone forward today. Yeah, I know. Good luck with that.
